Haley Jensen 2nd period blogging for Tuesday March 29,2011
Tuesday was a rough day for I think everyone. We were so used to sleeping in and not having to do school work,so we had to re-adjust back to our normal school schedule. I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break.
On the way into class we had to pick up a 5-step sheet for assessing the documents about Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. We were originally supposed to write the essay the friday before spring break but if you were in class you know that we did not do that. However, the work sheet we had to pick up was a result of not doing so. You had to complete step 1 in class, then Ms. McCarron went around the classroom asking different students what they wrote in the box. For homework you were supposed to complete step 2 and be ready to do step 3 in class on Wednesday.
Also,if you ordered a review book, they were in so make sure you picked yours up.
Happy April Fools Day! For those of you who like to pull tricks and do jokes, this day was meant especially for you. Hope everyone got someone good with a funny but not too harsh joke!
In class we talked about the progressive movement and how there was more literature coming out at the time. You could also say it was like a "literary renaissance". One of the books we talked about was by Lincoln Stefens called "Shame of Cities". It pointed out machine politics. We also talked about the Interstate Commerce Act and that it led to the Interstate Commerce Commission. The ICC was intended to restrict and oppress businesses. We also talked about the Elkins Act which outlawed RR rebates, the sherman anti-trust act which in result the clayton act closed loopholes in the sherman anti-trust act. We talked about moral improvement and that it was to make people "better behaved" and was about social control.

Haley is correct; we were all very sleepy. Some of us had done Mrs. McCarron's homework and "found our brains" though. For the second step of the homework, you were supposed to summarize your thesis in under 55 words. Step three is to have a peer review your summary and confirm word count. Step four is to summarize in exactly 20 words. Step five is to clearly rewrite your revised, 20 word summary.

It was April Fool's day, but Mrs. McCarron didn't prank us with a pop-test. The Progressive movevment had 4 main goals: protect social welfare, create economic reform, prompt moral improvement, and improve efficiency. It extended democracy through secret ballots, which harmed machines since they lost clout. Also creted was referendum and initiative. A referendum alows the people get to vote on the passage of legislative measures. An initiative allows people to initiate the creation of bills. Also, direct election of senators was permitted. Regulatory acts such as the Elkins Act (outlaw rebates), the Mann-Elkins Act (Strengthening and extending the ICC's power), the Federal Trade Commission (strengthening federal bureaus) and the Clayton Act (Solidifying the Sherman Antitrust Act) all showed a step away from laissez-faire capitalism. Practice Tests this weekend!!
Rachel Shaeffer- Reviewer for Monday There wasn't much to comment on because it was a Teacher Work Day but Peyton did remind us that the break is over :(. The only other helpful thing he could have added is possible due dates for the near future, etc.
Rachel Shaeffer- Reviewer for Wednesday Our notes in class were mainly about Progressive Era reforms, very important information. And yes, we did bring our brains it was a nice class period.
