-->North able to last longer in this war
-entrepeneurs such as Carnegie got extremely wealthy from high-risk jobs during the war
-->after war able to invest
-Gettysburg is turning point of the Civil War

We had one pickup with the United States map quiz dates. The first one is next Monday, 2/2.

Pivotal Battles of the Civil War
-Fort Sumter is the first battle of the war and a Confederate victory. Because of this, the Upper South decides to secede.
- 1st Battle of Bull Run in July 1861(also called Manassas by Southerners who named it for the town, not the water source.) This is very important due tot he battle's proximity to Washington. The Union army is unprepared and has to retreat along with alarmed civilians who came to watch.
-There is a second Battle of Bull Run in the Summer of 1862
-Antietam (Sharpsburg)was in Union territory. The Confederate army tried to flank Washington, but the Union won because although they lost more men, they maintained control of the land. Bloodiest battle so far. Followed by the Emancipation Proclamation which changed the purpose of the war from preserving the Union to abolishing slavery in the South.
-Gettysburg was THE turning point of the Civil War. In the battle the armies create two fishhook formations.

Quiz on Terms List #16 tomorrow on Thursday, 1/29.

Today in class we took Terms Quiz #16 and had notebooks graded.

Lecture Notes
-Both the North and the South had problems with inflation but it was much worse in the South due to less income
-As a result, paper money is printed (greenbacks), but this worsens the situation.
-Also, both sides had conscription, or draft, laws. These were more lenient in the North because there are more people available, so rick folks can pay for a substitute. Many called the war, a "poor man's war" because those without money had to fight.
-Homestead Act (1862) gave 160 acres to those who would cultivate and develop the land. However, this was all in the Great Plains so growing crops and building houses were difficult.
- Pacific Railways Act (1862) gave large amounts of land to companies to make a transcontinental railroad. Telegraph system is established at the same time.
-Morrill Land Grant Act (1862) gave land to any college which would provide agricultural, technical and military training. This provided an opportunity for the development of black colleges. Also, College education begins to become more qualifying than apprenticeships.

Today we took a United States map quiz in which we had to identify the locations of the 50 States. Afterwards, we got into groups of four and collaborated on writing the DBQ we have been looking at (In what ways and to what extent did constitutional and social developments between 1860 and 1877 amount to a revolution?)
Remember, tomorrow we will take Terms Quiz 17.Be prepared!
