Today in class we mostly talked about immigration, images about immigration, asians, bald eagles, and a little bit about our test tomorrow.
Mrs. McCarron lectured about the massive flow of immigration during the 1880s. The immigrants include the Chinese and "new" immigrants. Acts were made, for example the Chinese Exclusion Act, to help lessen the flow of immigration. Most people believed that the immigrants were "stealing" jobs from them.
Another immigration topic Mrs. McCarron lectured us on was about the immigration stations. One of them would be Ellis Island in New York and another in San Francisco, Angel Island. We learned that incoming immigrants would arrive at immigration stations and they were inspected for diseases before coming to live in the United States. Some of them would even get their names changed either because of how different their names would be.
We were sidetracked and began talking about bald eagles: how gargantuous they are and how they love to apparently snatch up babies and little dogs.
Anyway, we finished the period by looking at some immigration images, graphs, and cartoons. The images include the gender segregated the Japanese were during their voyage to the United States, how the immigrants traveled, and the immigrants during their visit at the immigration station. The graphs include the rise and fall of the number of "old" immigrants, "new" immigrants, and the asians. The cartoons were about how immigrants were either allowed entry to America, one was when immigrants were welcomed by Uncle Sam, and another one was of Uncle Sam's face and his facial features were of the different immigrants ("new", "old", asians, the Native Americans, Africans).
Remember our Unit 7 test is tomorrow so STUDY HARD. Finish your Test reviews for tomorrow, time line and all. Mrs. McCarron would be on Nicenet during 7:30 PM to review and just in case you missed it, you can either go back and look at all the questions and answers or ask your fellow APUSHers. Have a great day!
Today we recieved our notebooks back and created a new unit page. This is the unit page so you can make yours now, just in case you weren't in class today:
Unit 7: Pops, Progs, and Imps. 1880 - 1920 Terms Lists: 18, 19, 20 Unit Test: TBA
We started off our new unit by talking about the definition of U.S. History and created a timeline from 1700-2000. The timeline includes all the eras that we covered from the Great Awakening to the 1960s. We discussed the problems of the Progressive Era: poor working conditions, poor wages, poor living conditions, and discrimination (not just black and white). Then Mrs. McCarron continued by talking about agri-business and how farmers are discontent with business farmers.
Make sure that you started on your APUSH Terms List #19 so you don't have to do an all-nighter tomorrow! Terms quiz on friday and study study hard! Have a great day everyone!
We had a Unit 6 Test and turned in our summary sheets and timelines. After the test we were told to pick up a wizard of oz reading packet and we could either read that or work on terms since our quiz is friday. The test took most of the period.
Today in class we talked about the Wizard of Oz and its relations to The United States. For example, the silver shoes and the yellow brick road are symbols for silver being demonitized and the yellow bricks are gold bricks. Another one was that good people live north and south (the good witch glenda lives north and she has a sister who live south) and bad people live east and west (alfabob the wicked witch of the west and her sister who is a pair of stockings now that lives in the east) however not all people who live east and west are bad. We also looked at some charts, graphs, and political cartoons. The chart was of profits and losses farmers had from 1865- I think 1910. There was a significant amount of losses at the turn of the century especially in 1895. We also looked at a political cartoon representing smaller parties that made up the populist party. We also made another connection to the wizard of oz, that oz is the abbreviation for "ounce" and that 1 ounce of gold was equal to 16 ounces of silver.
Don't forget terms quiz tomorrow!! Some people did not do the right terms list so notebooks are optional is what I think her words were but YOU NEED TO KNOW THE TERMS!
Have a wonderful Thursday, drive safely through the nasty weather and TOMORROW IS FRIDAY!! :)
Klarizza did a very thorough job on her blog post. She reminded us all of the terms and specific dates. She also gave a nice overview of what we did in class that day. Good Work!
Peyton is definitely right about this being the last week before spring break! However, again, the terms quiz 20 is THURSDAY, 3/17. Be ready to take some more notes on the Progressive Era!
